Design Thinking Techniques for Trainers

As a trainer, instructional designer, or educator, it’s your mission to help employees within your organization perform at their best and drive results for the organization. Yet despite the best intentions, you may be out of touch with the true needs or perspectives of your learners.

This session showcases a different way to think about designing a learning experience. It uses design thinking to help participants find a balance between business needs, learner needs, and technical constraints. Participants will practice using two turnkey Design Thinking tools: empathy maps and user journey maps. These two tools can be introduced at the design phase of a training initiative to better gain the perspectives of target learners and identify pain points and opportunities to leverage. The result of this effort is an experience that is optimized to truly delight your learners and to avoid creating experiences that fall flat. We’ll practice with the tools in this session and identify tactics for applying design thinking to your own endeavors.

After attending this session, you'll be able to:

Identify situations where a design thinking approach can add insight.

Generate a simple empathy map.

Use an example learning journey map to start defining your own learning journey.
