Who Is Using Moodle? We are!
I checked today and since April we’ve logged about 160 hours getting Moodle installed and configured as well as getting 3 courses created in it. We’ve also input a whopping 16 users (who I still haven’t figured out how to send a mass email to). In general, we’re having a ball learning Moodle and I am extremely excited about its power to enhance learning in an organization.
When I say “we,” I mean two people with some peaks over the shoulder from a third one. Thank goodness I have a “techie” person who did the installation and some initial configuration tasks. I’ve taken it from there and done tons of work setting up courses and continuing to configure the site. Moodle is definitely a learn by trying it kind of thing; it also simply takes TIME to do system admin and course creation tasks. Yes, it’s “free” in that the code doesn’t cost you anything, but I don’t work for free and neither does my “techie” partner, Kelly. We get paid, and when we’re workin’ on Moodle we aren’t doing the other parts of our jobs.
I’m excited by the possibilites and I really, really want to know: who else in the corporate world is Moodling? If you are using Moodle:
- Why did you choose it as your LMS?
- What have been your greatest triumphs?
- What has been your greatest challenge that you want to share with others?
If you aren’t using it, share what you’ve heard about it!
I’ll be posting more on Moodle the rest of this month. In my next post, I’ll share what two other Moodlers have done with it - and why they chose it for their organizations.

Hi Sharon!
Exciting to hear about your adventures with Moodle. I do think corporate moodling/open source is on the rise. We do a lot of Moodle installations for our corporate clients, so I speak from experience
Looking forward to more tales from your journey.

we employ Moodle with about 65000 users world wide. It’s a great program as long as you understand it’s limitations and what it does best (namely charting out courses, providing a pay portal and assessing student work).
As far as sending all users bulk messages, if you haven’t checked it out already: login as admin, click users in the admin block and then look for bulk user actions. There is a menu just like assign roles that you can use to send an email blast to all users.
Best of luck!

Thanks to Joseph, Helene, and Cammie for your replies.
Joe - I did use bulk user actions. It appears to only send bulk messages within Moodle - not to the Moodlers’ email accounts. If you know another trick, give me a shout.

Hi Sharon,
Glad to hear you are making progress on your moodle implementation. I am about 6 months in and I am still learning something new about Moodle everyday. In regards to your email problem. I believe the messages you send within moodle will be forwarded to the users email address if they have not logged in after a certain amount of time. Outside of that, I believe you may need a plugin with better emailing options. I am going to install a plugin MOOMIS which claims that they solve your email problem. I’ll let you know how it goes. The link below will take you to some information on MOOMIS.

Thanks Joe! We solved our email problem by adjusting SMPT settings; I am interested in learning more about MOOMIS.
