You’ve no doubt heard by now that the folks at Apple are releasing the iPad 2 this month. Given its success in the past year, it’s not surprising that the updates are more subtle, iterating on the initial design. While the addition of cameras has got the lion’s share of the attention, one feature that is worth being aware of is the new Video Mirroring.
Video Mirroring enables the duplication of an iPad 2 screen display through the Digital AV Adapter accessory to an HDMI capable projector, TV, or monitor. This means that what you see on your iPad 2, your audience will now see up on the big screen. Educators will now be able to easily display the rich media elements of an application or created material that they have access to on their device. This will also give them the capability to manipulate their presentations in real-time as they interact with their audience.
It’s pretty easy to imagine scenarios where this would be useful, perhaps you need to display a detailed 3D model showing a medical condition, a detailed financial data visualization, or simply images that it would be helpful to zoom in and out of while you talk to your learners. Regardless of how it might be used the technological barriers that previously made this more difficult have been substantially reduced.
Have an app in mind that you think would lend itself well to Video Mirroring? Perhaps you have an idea of a new app that you’d like to see created to take advantage of it? Leave your thoughts in the comments and let’s see what ideas we can come up with!
I was given an IPAD to test out as a training tool and was disappointed at its inability to support bigger programs or to use MSOffice tools. Is this changing with the new Ipad?
What program could you offer 3D modeling on the Ipad with for example? Or are you talking about apps developed just for the Ipad?
@Mind the Gap:
Hey there MTG, general application support did not change with the new hardware, although the processor and memory have been increased so that from a hardware perspective, it is definitely more capable than the previous version. If you are looking for some programs that utilize some effective 3D modeling, the application “Solar Walk – 3D Solar System model” is really sharp, and perhaps the best known one is “The Elements: A Visual Exploration” which you can review in this video:

There is no question that right now the path to creating an effective iPad applications with advanced features like this would entail building a native application. However I have seen some impressive examples showing advancements with jQuery and some HTML5 elements with fairly complicated 3D modeling (such as Quake running in an HTML5 compatible browser).

Hi Chris,
I’d be interested in learning more about your project so that I can consider your request, feel free to contact me at brandon (at) bottomlineperformance.com.
Take care!

Nice job cant wait to see the rest of the videos. Your wife should really apreciate the project. does she know you are building it?
